General Detoxification Programme

A general detoxification programme aims to improve both liver detoxification processes and bowel elimination.

As a general rule this involves reducing:

  • The amount of processed and refined foods and beverages, that contain additives and are often high in sugar, contain poor quality fats, and are often low in nutrients and fibre
  • The amount of saturated fat and highly processed fats, i.e. margarines etc
  • And: avoidance of alcohol and stimulant.

    Food to avoid

    Table sugar and added sugars Fresh fruit, honey, rice malt, maple syrup
    Reduce salt intake Tamari, Soyu
    Wheat - refined flour Fish, tofu, tempeh, legumes
    Dairy - milk, cheese, yogurt 1 egg (organic) daily can be tolerated
    Soft drinks Soy, rice, almond milks and products
    Chocolate, lollies, cakes, biscuits, donuts Rice, buckwheat, oats, rye, millet, spelt
    No take-away or fried foods Fresh fruit, nuts and seeds, rice cake with tahini & a little honey or rice malt.
    Soft drinks Sparkling mineral water, water, fresh vegetable juices
    Jams an spreads Tahini, honey, rice malt, avocado
    Dried fruit with sulphur preservatives Sun dried fruits- minimal intake as still very high in sugar
    Butter, margarines Avocado, extra virgin olive oil, tahinni, nut butters except peanut.
    Polyunsaturated cooking oils Extra virgin olive oil, cold pressed oils, walnut oil. Try not to expose oils to very high temperatures for extended periods of time. Never cook with Flax seed or walnut oil.
    Alcohol Sparkling mineral water with lime or lemon, diluted juice with lime or lemon
    Caffeine drinks Dandelion coffee, dandelion tea, peppermint tea, chamomile tea, all herbal teas.

Note

  • Eat whole foods and avoid processed foods, packaged and canned foods.
  • Avoid take-away. When dining out select salads, vegetables with fish.
  • Buy organic foods where possible - particularly eggs.
  • Read labels and avoid additives as much as possible.
  • Larger fish such as shark, tuna, marlin, sword fish may have a higher concentration of heavy metals than smaller fish. Keep intake of these larger fish to once weekly whilst on this diet.
  • Fish to include that are good sources of Omega 3 (preferably fresh)- sardines, trout, mackerel, salmon, cod, mullet, trevally.
  • Avoid smoked and preserved foods

Food to eat freely

All sprouted seeds, grains, legumes, mung beans - make sure they are fresh Organic eggs
All fresh fruit Wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta, brown rice
All raw and steamed vegetables - excluding potato and tomatoes (if these foods feature daily in your usual diet) Soya products - tofu, tempeh, miso, soy milk
All nuts and seeds, almonds, sunflower seeds, walnuts cashews, Brazil, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds - fresh and unsalted Legumes - aduki, pinto, black - eyed pea, green peas, green beans, lentils, chickpeas
All whole grins, rolled oats, buckwheat, millet, spelt, amaranth, quinoa, rice, corn, wild rice Fresh herbs and spices - parsley, dill, garlic, tumeric, chives, shallots, onions, coriander, basil, thyme, ginger etc.
Grilled or steamed fish Filtered water, herbal teas

    Daily schedule

  • Start the day with the juice of ½ a lemon in a glass of warm water
  • Add 1 dsp of psyllium husks to morning cereal or take in a glass of water each morning. Take another dsp before bed in water or diluted juice.
  • Drink at least 2.5 litres of water daily
  • If available to you have a glass of fresh vegetable juice daily - carrot, celery, beetroot broccoli, cabbage etc.
  • Have a fresh green salad each day.
  • Include cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, mustard greens in your diet a few times pr week.
  • Skin brush every day or second day whilst showering
  • 30 minute exercise daily or every second day.
